Do All Singers Write Their Own Songs?

Sep 22 · 4 min read

Singers are often asked by their fans about the songs they sing. Some of the most common questions include "Do you write your own music?" "How do you get ideas for songs?" and "How much input do you have on creating new music?"

Not all singers write the songs they perform. Famous pop singers often buy songs from professional songwriters or producers.

Not all singers write their own songs.

Here are some reasons why singers might choose to work with songwriters:

  • Singers can use songwriters to help them write their own songs. Sometimes artists collaborate with professional songwriters. The artist has to make sure that the song is one they relate to and can perform compellingly.
  • Singers can collaborate with songwriters who have experience writing the kind of music they want to create. This will help them hone in on their own sound and make sure that the songs are a good fit for their voice and style. Singer-songwriters can use a team of writers and editors to help them write new songs.
  • Artists will also pick prewritten songs that they like. Huge recording artists like Beyonce and Justin Bieber will listen to hundreds are finished songs and pick the ones they like the best. Professional singers are always on the lookout for a song they think will be their next big hit.

Check out this fun video of Ed Sheeran writing a song he gave to Justin Bieber:

Some singers like to collaborate with professional songwriters in the music industry.

In the music industry, there are two types of songwriters: professional songwriters and amateur songwriters. A professional songwriter is someone who makes money from writing songs, while an amateur songwriter is someone who writes songs for fun.

Singer-songwriters often find inspiration from other artists' material and use that as a starting point for their own composition. Artists can also buy the rights to perform other artists songs.

Many singers and songwriters find inspiration from other artists' material and then use that as a starting point for their own compositions. In fact, some musicians have even gone so far as to buy the rights to perform other artists' songs or purchase sheet music of popular tunes, only to make them their own.

Jimi Hendrix bought the rights to perform All Along the Watchtower from Bob Dylan in 1966. He played it on his hit single Are You Experienced? which became one of his most popular hits and was later covered by numerous other artists such as The Police (1983), Pearl Jam (1991), U2 (1992) and Counting Crows (1994).

Bob Dylan wrote many songs that became other artists' hit songs: Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door by Guns ‘N Roses (#1 US), Lay Lady Lay by Bobbie Gentry (#13 US), Mr. Tamborine Man by The Byrds (#1 US).

Songwriters are also often the producer of the song. This means that they create all the background music for the singer to sing over. This is a really great situation because everything fits together perfectly!

Writing songs requires an entirely different skill set than singing them.

A songwriter is someone who writes songs. A singer is someone who sings songs. You see where we're going here?

You need a completely different set of skills to be good at both, so let's not get confused about the fact that many famous singers are also great songwriters. But why do we often see them credited as writers on their own (or other people's) material? Why aren't they just considered artists?

There are many ways to create the art you love and not all of them require you to be a great singer or songwriter

You don't need to be a great singer and songwriter to create music that you love. There are many other ways to do it. Here are some examples:

  • You can get help from a songwriter who will write and arrange the music for you.
  • You can arrange existing songs and make them into something new and exciting that only you could do.
  • You can collaborate with other singers and musicians, creating something unique together rather than trying to steal their work or ideas behind their back like so many people in the industry do these days!
  • You can work with producers who specialize in creating new sounds for different genres of music, such as EDM pop or hip hop rock fusion mashup tracks for example (I'm not saying those genres themselves exist but I think they would sound really cool).
  • Or maybe there's something else entirely, like working with dancers or choreographers on creating a whole new performance piece which incorporates all these different types of art forms into one cohesive piece - which isn't easy by any means!

The bottom line is that there are many ways to create the music you love and not all of them require you to be a great singer or songwriter. If you have an idea for a song, but don’t feel ready to write it yourself, there are plenty of other options available!

You can always collaborate with someone else who has more experience than you do in this area (or just gets along better with their voice). Or maybe your best bet would be hiring someone like us at Song Zinger who will take care of everything so that all those pesky details won't get in the way of your dreams becoming reality!
